How to get AMPYRA

There are a few steps you need to take in order to receive your AMPYRA® (dalfampridine).

These steps take you from the moment your doctor prescribes AMPYRA right through to refilling your next prescription. They are:

  1. Complete the enrollment form with your physician.
  2. Confirm your insurance information. Someone from AMPYRA Patient Support Services (APSS) will call to confirm your insurance information.
    • APSS can also confirm your eligibility for co-pay mitigation. (People with private insurance may not pay more than $40 per month for their medication, where allowed by law.)
    • If you don’t have insurance, APSS can work with you to see if you are eligible for AMPYRA’s Patient Assistance Program.
    • Once they’ve confirmed your coverage, someone from APSS will call you to let you know your co-pay amount and tell you which specialty pharmacy will fill your prescription.
  3. Schedule your medication delivery. Within a few days after being contacted by APSS, you'll receive a call from the specialty pharmacy to schedule your medication delivery.
  4. Get your AMPYRA. You will receive your medication within 3 days of scheduling your delivery.
  5. Refill your prescription. Prior to necessary refills, you'll be called again by the specialty pharmacy to arrange for another delivery. You must speak to the specialty pharmacy. If you do not, they will not be able to ship your AMPYRA.

To help ensure accurate processing, please be sure to answer phone calls from unrecognizable 800/888 phone numbers and promptly return any messages concerning your prescription.

How to start AMPYRA

To start AMPYRA, take it as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended dose is one tablet two times each day — about 12 hours apart. Do not take more than two tablets of AMPYRA in a 24-hour period and do not change your dose.

Take your AMPYRA tablets whole. Do not break, crush, chew or dissolve AMPYRA tablets before swallowing. If you cannot swallow AMPYRA tablets whole, tell your doctor. AMPYRA is released slowly over time. If the tablet is broken, the medicine may be released too quickly. This can increase your chance of having a seizure.

AMPYRA can be taken with or without food.

You can take AMPYRA even if you are taking other medications for multiple sclerosis (MS). AMPYRA is not meant to replace your current MS medication.

Some people experience improvement in their walking ability within a couple of weeks. Others notice improvement up to 6 weeks after starting. AMPYRA does not work for everyone. Individual results may vary. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions on taking AMPYRA.

AMPYRA® (dalfampridine) is indicated as a treatment to improve walking in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). This was demonstrated by an increase in walking speed.

IMPORTANT NEW SAFETY INFORMATION

Do not take AMPYRA if you are allergic to dalfampridine (4-aminopyridine), the active ingredient in AMPYRA.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Do not take AMPYRA if you have ever had a seizure, or have certain types of kidney problems, or are allergic to dalfampridine (4-aminopyridine), the active ingredient in AMPYRA.

Take AMPYRA exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

You could have a seizure even if you never had a seizure before. Your chance of having a seizure is higher if you take too much AMPYRA or if your kidneys have a mild decrease of function, which is common after age 50.

Your doctor may do a blood test to check how well your kidneys are working, if that is not known before you start taking AMPYRA.

AMPYRA may cause serious allergic reactions. Stop taking AMPYRA and call your doctor right away or get emergency medical help if you have shortness of breath or trouble breathing, swelling of your throat or tongue, or hives.

AMPYRA should not be taken with other forms of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP, fampridine), since the active ingredient is the same.

The most common adverse events for AMPYRA in MS patients were urinary tract infection, trouble sleeping, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, back pain, and problems with balance.

Before taking AMPYRA tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if AMPYRA will harm your unborn baby.

Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. It is not known if AMPYRA passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take AMPYRA or breast-feed. You should not do both.
